Alternative Treatment Methods for Allergies

Allergies can be incredibly frustrating to deal with, especially with the citrus trees blooming in Arizona. This time of year has people walking around with red eyes, sneezing attacks and pressure headaches. Allergies will affect everyone differently, with many people not experiencing any symptoms at all. For those who unfortunately do suffer from allergies, many alternative treatment options are available.

Alternative Treatment for Allergies

Herbal Treatment

Certain herbs and nutrients can help manage allergy symptoms. Before treating yourself, you should consult a naturopath to discuss herb dosage and frequency for many important reasons. For instance, some with certain conditions may take medications that might react negatively to the herbs or supplements. On the other hand, some people may think they have allergies but could actually be suffering from a different illness. A naturopath can help determine a supplemental program best for you and your symptoms.

Supplements like Quercetin, Skullcap, EGCG (green tea), and Nettle Leaf have antihistamine properties that treat allergy symptoms very effectively.  An overactive immune system causes allergy symptoms, because it attacks antigens it thinks are dangerous. Supplements like vitamin C, vitamin D, probiotics, Elderberry and Spirulina help optimize the immune system, which helps stops allergy symptoms from forming. Some supplements (Bromelain) can even target certain symptoms, like inflammation in the sinuses. There are numerous combinations that can be tailored for a specific individual.

If supplements aren’t providing enough relief or symptoms are severe, a more pre-emptive approach may be necessary. Immunotherapy also helps optimize the immune system. As previously mentioned, an overactive or imbalanced immune system produces an aggressive attack when a harmless antigen is detected. Immunotherapy restrains the immune system so that certain antigens are no longer considered a threat. This process is a slow one that takes many months, but is also a permanent allergy solution.

Immunotherapy works by introducing miniscule amounts of pollutants to the body. Slowly over time, the amount is increased to get the immune system use to pollutants.

Immunotherapy can be done a few different ways. One of the better known programs are the allergy shots administered in a doctor’s office. This approach can be time consuming, painful, expensive and could potentially cause a serious allergic reaction.

An alternative approach is using sublingual drops that are dispensed at a doctor’s office, but are taken daily at home. Most drops are natural and can be taken by anyone including children. Drops can be customized by a naturopath for the patient to ensure the best response. This is one of the better options for natural allergy treatment.

For many people, allergies are unavoidable. Buying over the counter medications to combat allergy symptoms is a temporary fix that includes side effects like drowsiness, and may not be suitable for children. This fix can be a vicious cycle that never improves the actual cause. Herbal treatment and Immunotherapy is highly suggested for anyone wanting to rid themselves of allergy symptoms.

Natural Treatment Options for HPV

The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is more common than you may think. In fact, some experts estimate that up to 80% of sexually active adults have been exposed to the virus at some point, making it the most sexually transmitted disease in the U.S. Despite this large number, most who become infected develop no symptoms or health issues and may never know they ever have the disease.

What is HPV?

HPV is a group of more than 150 related viruses. Each HPV virus in this large group is given a number which is called its HPV type. In 90% of cases, HPV goes away on its own and does not cause any health problems. However, in some cases it can cause genital warts and cancer.

Some HPV types can lead to mouth, throat, anus, penile, vaginal or cervical cancer.

How Does HPV Spread?

HPV is transmitted through intimate skin-to-skin contact. You can get HPV by having vaginal, anal or oral sex with someone who has the virus. HPV is so common, that nearly all men and women get it at some point in their lives and can be passed even when an infected person has no signs or symptoms.

Natural Treatment Options for HPV

While HPV may sound scary, the severe cases are extremely rare. Some studies estimate that 50% of those infected will clear the virus within eight months without treatment or even knowing they had it. Over 90% will be cleared in two years. A healthy immune system can easily fight off most strains of HPV.

If someone with a HPV infection wanted to speed up their recovery, there are many supplements that can make a difference. Vitamin B12, folic acid, curcumin, Vitamin C, and Vitamin E are proven to naturally treat HPV overtime. Anti-viral nutrients like oregano, garlic, tea tree oil, thuja oil, and goldenseal may also help treat HPV.

For maximum results, in-office treatments like intravenous infusions (IV) can deliver high levels of nutrients. IV therapies are one of the most aggressive yet natural HPV treatment options.

Since HPV is a virus, intravenous anti-viral substances like Ozone can target and kill it by oxygenating the blood. This creates an alkaline environment, which also helps support the immune system. This helps fight off viruses because diseases prefer acidic environments.

For the few who develop a more aggressive form of HPV that causes cancer, a natural cancer treatment may lead to the best recovery. A naturopathic physician can come up with an individualized treatment plan for you and your symptoms.

Benefits of Using Alternative Medicine for Pain Management

According to Johns Hopkins University, more than 40 percent of Americans report using alternative medicine therapies for pain control. Alternative medicine offers an integrated approach to healing and may include interventions such as herbal remedies, reflexology, prolotherapy, chiropractic, nutritional supplements, massage therapy and acupuncture.

Pain Management

Many people turn to alternative medicine therapies for pain relief when traditional treatments fail to work. Alternative medicine also offers treatment options to individuals who do not have access to pain clinics under their health insurance plans. A study published in the Journal of Pain Medicine conducted by researchers at the University of Michigan Health System, found that older individuals who suffer chronic pain conditions use alternative therapies more frequently.

Joint Pain Management

Joint Pain can be treated naturally using alternative medicine. Regenerative Joint Therapy, or Prolotherapy, is a technique that uses injections filled with natural substances, nutrients and Ozone to relieve pain in the injured joint.

Stem cell therapy also offers chronic pain sufferers the ability to use specialized stem cells to replicate bone, organ, or muscle cells to replace damaged ones.

These therapies have helped thousands of patients avoid joint replacement surgery.

Alternative medicine therapies used together with conventional medical treatments can alleviate some of the symptoms of cancer and lessen the negative side effects of conventional medical treatments. Chemotherapy, although effective in increasing the survival rate of many cancer patients, can produce unpleasant side effects. Some cancer patients are able to tolerate chemotherapy treatments better when using an alternative to control side effects like fatigue, headache, nausea, vomiting, night sweats and aching.

Overall Health

Alternative medicine can be beneficial to a person’s overall well being, as the approach focuses on healing the mind, body and spirit. Treatment methods such as massage therapy, biofeedback, meditation and visual imagery help a person to relax and reduce stress. Art and music therapies are used to relieve symptoms of depression and schizophrenia by stimulating the natural release of endorphins and opiates in the body, in addition to helping individuals let go of deeply repressed emotions.

Alternative medicine therapies can be less expensive than conventional medical treatments. Although some alternative therapies are not cheap, many herbal remedies and other natural treatments still cost less than prescription medications and treatments. In fact, most insurance companies will reimburse you for alternative medicine practices if you submit a claim.

Side Effects

In most cases, effective alternative therapies have fewer or no side effects as opposed to conventional medical treatments. Natural remedies can also help you decrease dependency on prescription medications.

What is Dementia?

Dementia is a syndrome, not a specific disease. It is a collective term used to describe various symptoms of cognitive decline, such as forgetfulness, inability to think clearly and communication impairment.  Dementia is a symptom of several underlying diseases and brain disorders.

While the likelihood of having dementia increases with age, it is not a normal part of aging.

What Causes Dementia?

Dementia can be caused by many things, but progressive brain cell death is the leading cause associated with most dementia patients. However, it can also be caused by a head injury, stroke, brain tumor, disease or infection.

Dementia Symptoms

A person with dementia may show any of the symptoms listed below, mostly due to memory loss. Some symptoms they may notice themselves, others may only be noticed by caregivers or healthcare workers.

The signs used to compile this list are published by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) in the journal American Family Physician.

Possible symptoms of dementia include:

  • Recent memory loss– a sign of this might be asking the same question repeatedly.
  • Difficulty completing familiar tasks– for example, making a drink or cooking a meal.
  • Problems communicating– difficulty with language; forgetting simple words or using the wrong ones.
  • Disorientation– getting lost on a previously familiar street, for example.
  • Problems with abstract thinking– for instance, dealing with money.
  • Misplacing things– forgetting the location of everyday items such as keys, or wallets, for example.
  • Mood changes– sudden and unexplained changes in outlook or disposition.
  • Personality changes– perhaps becoming irritable, suspicious or fearful.
  • Loss of initiative– showing less interest in starting something or going somewhere.

Benefits of a Medical Peel

Medical peels are a great solution for a range of skin concerns, from wrinkles to acne to hyper-pigmentation.  So if you’re in search of a way to get brighter, clearer, more youthful-looking skin, a medical peel could be the answer. Need more information before you commit? Take a look below at 5 skin benefits of medical peels.

Reduces Wrinkles

Medical peels reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by removing the outer layer of your skin to reveal a new layer that is fresh, smooth, and unlined. Sometimes a light peel is sufficient for addressing surface wrinkles. Depending on your cosmetic goals, a moderate or deep peel may be a better solution.

Corrects Sun Damage

Did you know that exposure to radiation from sunlight accounts for as much as 90% of the signs of premature aging? Fortunately, medical peels can help repair and reverse the sun damage on the skin of your face, hands, neck, and chest.

Treats Acne

Studies have reported that medical peels containing salicylic acid reduce acne by 47-75%, and 50-95% of patients saw their acne significantly improved with peels containing glycolic acid a well. Most chemical peels that treat acne are on the lighter side, as acne is typically a surface skin issue.

Diminishes the Appearance of Scars

Moderate chemical peels treat both surface acne and some light scarring by penetrating more deeply into the skin. For diminishing the appearance of more significant acne scars, a deeper peel is required.

Enhances Skin

In addition to addressing your current skin issues, a chemical peel treatment also stimulates the growth of fresh, new skin. This rejuvenates the overall tone and texture of your skin!

How Alternative Medicine Can Help Treat Chronic Fatigue

Being tired after a late night is completely logical, but being chronically tired, no matter the amount of sleep you get, is not. Many people suffer from chronic fatigue even though they get an adequate amount of sleep. The consumption of caffeine does little to ward off the relentless yawns or the inevitable nod-offs.  Even when they’re able to take a nap, the fatigue always returns.

These people have a much bigger problem than staying up too late. Their fatigue could actually be a hormonal imbalance.

Chronic fatigue can be caused by the following imbalances:

Cortisol Imbalance

The little glands located of top of each kidney produce a variety of essential hormones that are extremely important to achieve homeostasis within the body. These adrenal glands respond to stress with a hormone called cortisol. Any time the body encounters stress, this hormone is released. Someone who is chronically stressed can literally exhaust their adrenal glands, reducing or even eliminating cortisol levels within the body. This can cause the adrenal glands to produce cortisol when they shouldn’t, like at night.

High levels of cortisol at night make sleeping almost impossible. Racing thoughts or a rapid heartbeat at night could be a sign of a cortisol imbalance. Symptoms of adrenal insufficiency include fatigue, difficulty getting up in the morning, more energy in the evening, lightheadedness, weak immune system, body aches and unexplained weight loss.

Thyroid Imbalance

The thyroid gland also produces vital hormones. This little gland is located in the base of the neck and influences the function of major organs like the brain, heart, skin, liver and kidneys. It also helps regulate heart rate, body temperature and metabolism.

Chronic fatigue is a very common symptom of thyroid disease. Hypothyroidism is an underactive thyroid, meaning it doesn’t produce enough thyroid related hormones. Hyperthyroidism is an overactive thyroid where it produces an excessive amount of hormones.

Fatigue is a very common symptom in both because the conditions can result in insomnia, abnormal sleep patterns, and anxiety.

Other symptoms of hyperthyroidism include irregular heartbeat, unexplained weight loss, heat sensitivity, excessive hunger, and excessive sweating.

Symptoms of hypothyroidism include fatigue, dry skin, constipation, cold sensitivity, and unexplained weight gain.

Sex Hormone Imbalances

Sex hormones are also prone to imbalances. Hormones like estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone are all found in both sexes. When levels of any of these hormones either become too high or too low, many symptoms can be experienced. Sex hormone imbalances can cause issues like depression, anxiety, insomnia, and brain fog which can lead to a chronic state of fatigue.

Caution should be used when treating the endocrine system, so anyone experiencing chronic fatigue should consult with an experienced physician. All hormones are delicately interconnected, and treatment requires someone well versed in the field. The right physician will know which tests and treatment path is needed after a consultation.

There are many natural, safe and effective options available to treat chronic fatigue. For instance, a naturopathic physician can prescribe a natural hormone replacement therapy program. To schedule a consultation with one of our experienced naturopathic doctors, please click here.

Alternative Aging Treatments

Aging happens. Some do it naturally, and some have a little help. That help can come in many different forms; from supplements and aesthetic procedures to surgery. There are countless combinations in between to help slow down the hands of time. It’s inevitable to face yourself every day, and if the reflection in the mirror causes unhappiness, there’s plenty you can do about it.

Age Management Therapy

Age Management Therapy utilizes bio-identical hormones, nutritional supplements / IVs, exercise, diet, counseling and more to achieve optimal health in each individual patient.

Some goals in anti-aging medicine are:

  • Improving health
  • Preventing age-related diseases like dementia, cancer, heart disease, stroke, etc.
  • Improving quality of life with treatments to help with energy, memory, libido, ambition, body composition, etc.

Supplemental Injections

Any age management program should be recommended by a skilled physician and the process should start with a consultation.

Many non-surgical options are temporary, but some results can still last a few years.

A baby step into an anti-aging regime can begin with supplements. Collagen and hyaluronic acid are great examples of nutrients that can help restore skin volume and may help soften fine lines. They can even help replace lost supportive tissue in joints, easing joint pain.

Supplemental nutrients come in all shapes and sizes. They can be cheap, worthless, and sometimes even dangerous to the wrong person. Physician-grade supplements, only obtainable from a licensed physician, are among the highest quality supplements on the market. During your consultation, a program will be mapped out. Results can take months and will fade when the program stops. Despite this, many have found great results using this natural method.

Dermal Fillers

If you’re wanting a little more correction, you may want to explore products like BOTOX ® Cosmetic or Dysport ®. They’re injected into the forehead and eye area to smooth out wrinkles and fine lines. Both are a purified protein derived from a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. The bacteria are found in natural environments like lakes, soil, forests, and in some mammals and marine life. Once injected, it blocks the nerve impulse, causing the muscle to relax and the wrinkles to soften. The results are not permanent; it usually lasts an average of six months for most people. One of the best things about Botox ® Cosmetic and Dyport ® is the flexibility. You can opt to receive a little for a refreshed look or more depending on your taste. You can start slow, and if you’d prefer more correction, you can always schedule another appointment.

Either used alone or coupled with Botox ® Cosmetic or Dysport ®, dermal fillers can literally take decades off some faces. These products are universal. They can plump lips, remove wrinkles, enhance shallow contours, soften creases, and even improve the appearance of recessed scars.

Dermal fillers are most often used as volumizers, lifting and filling areas like cheeks, jawlines, chins, and temples.

Hormone Replacement Therapy

Another option for anyone wanting to combat the total effects of aging is Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). HRT addresses the side effects of aging like fatigue, weight gain, low libido, stamina, and mental cognition. This is a great option for anyone wanting to feel younger, not just look younger. This therapy requires a little more commitment with multiple office visits and bloodwork, but the payoff will be felt from the inside out.

Self-esteem has a significant impact on our health and outlook on life. Many people combat aging with the above options to help themselves feel and look the way they want. To start your ant-aging journey, schedule a consultation with one of our experienced physicians today!

How Alternative Medicine Can Help Prevent and Treat Cancer

Cancer is the leading cause of death and can be a very frightening disease to deal with. However, many don’t realize that there are alternative methods to prevent and treat cancer. Alternative cancer treatments can also help you cope with symptoms caused by cancer care and treatment.

Prevention Techniques

Preventing cancer, in theory, is relatively simple. Eat a clean diet, exercise regularly, manage stress and avoid pollutants. However, most people are unable to commit 100% to these lifestyle choices. A naturopathic physician can help fill in any gaps and help reduce the effects of certain vices. For example, if red meat is a particularly hard food to avoid for you, a naturopath can recommend supplements to help with inflammation. Most negative food choices can be minimized with the right corresponding supplement. Or for maximum support, a naturopath can prescribe an intravenous regime. High doses of certain nutrients can support the immune system greatly and help fight off diseases like cancer.

It’s imperative to fight cancer with a multi-faceted treatment plan, because one direction of cancer care is not enough to cure this disease. This is why alternative medicine creates a treatment plan specific to each patient and his/her diagnoses. Many things must be taken into consideration when creating a treatment plan, such as cancer type, stage, overall health, lifestyle and the emotional state of the patient.

Common treatment options for cancer, such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy, can be expensive and sometimes ineffective. Alternative treatment like intravenous therapies can help defeat cancer when combined with conventional medicine. For instance, research showed that patients who received combined treatment of conventional and  intravenous Vitamin C therapy had a slower progression of the disease, while others stated that the side effects of chemotherapy were less pronounced.

Ozone Therapy can also be used to treat cancer. Ozone is a colorless gas made up of three oxygen atoms. It is used as an alternative therapy to improve the body’s intake and use of oxygen and to activate the immune system. In medicine, ozone therapy is used to disinfect and treat diseases by limiting the effects of bacteria, viruses, fungi, yeast and protozoa. This creates an undesirable environment for diseases like cancer.

Alternative Treatment Options for Arthritis

Arthritis is very common, but is not well understood. It actually isn’t even a single disease, but an informal way of referring to joint pain or joint disease. There are more than 100 different types of arthritis, and it is the leading cause of disability in America. Although most think only the elderly suffer from joint pain, it actually affects people of all ages. In fact, more than 50 million adults and 300,000 children have some type of arthritis.

Two Main Types of Arthritis

Because there are numerous types of arthritis, only two are very well known: Osteoarthritis (OA) and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). Both can cause intense joint pain, but they are each caused by different factors. OA generally develops in joints that are overused such as the knees, hips and hand joints.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune condition and is caused by the immune system attacking healthy body tissue. RA often results in chronic inflammation, which can create swelling, pain, deformations, stiffness, and reduce movement and functionality of the joint.

Early Signs and Symptoms of Arthritis

Some early signs of Arthritis can include:

Conventional Treatment

Conventional treatment can be invasive and aggressive. Many RA sufferers are prescribed immune blockers that suppress the immune system, so that it no longer attacks healthy tissue. Although this works in theory, a weakened immune system puts you at a greater risk for developing infections and other serious complications like cancer.

For those suffering from OA, opioids like prescription pain killers are usually prescribed to alleviate pain. This method does not treat the disease at the source and opioids are highly addictive.

Alternative Treatment

Alternative treatment options are available for Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Joint Regeneration Therapy, also known as prolotherapy, specifically treats laxity in ligaments as well as swelling and pain in the effected joint.

Regenerative Joint Therapy is less invasive than traditional surgical repair because it uses the body’s own healing ability to repair itself. The treatment involves injections of local anesthetics and other commonly available natural substances to cause an inflammatory reaction that stimulates the body to make new connective tissue.

This injection technique has been performed for decades with great success and can be used in the:

  • Spine (neck and back)
  • The sacroiliac joints
  • Shoulders
  • Elbows
  • Hands
  • Fingers
  • Hips
  • Knees
  • Ankles
  • Feet

In place of prescription medication, natural supplements can also help arthritis sufferers overcome debilitating pain. A customized supplement plan developed by a Naturopath can help you eliminate pain and inflammation, and for those suffering from RA, can help treat immune system issues.

Why Choose Arizona Integrative Medical Center

Our Naturopathic doctors will listen to your symptoms and will come up with a treatment plan designed specifically for you and your level of joint pain. To schedule a consultation, please click here. Regenerative Medicine – An Alternative Solution for Joint Pain

Living with chronic pain can disrupt your life and make it impossible for you to do your job, play with your kids, or remain independent.

The good news is there are innovative new regenerative medicine treatments that can help restore your quality of life. These treatments include:

  • Platelet-rich plasma therapy
  • Cell therapy
  • Prolotherapy and Neural Prolotherapy

Overall, regenerative medicine can help restore your joints, muscles, tendons ligaments and nerves without surgery. It can also help you reduce your reliance on pain medications often associated with chronic pain.

What is Regenerative Medicine?

Regenerative medicine may be defined as the process of replacing or “regenerating” human cells, tissues or organs to restore or establish normal function. This process works by stimulating the body’s own repair mechanisms to heal tissues. This is accomplished by obtaining growth factors from the patient’s own blood. Blood contains the building blocks for life, including platelets. Platelets contain numerous growth factors which act by stimulating different cell mechanisms including:

Macrophage Chemotaxis – the type of white blood cell responsible for digesting foreign matter.

Angiogensis – the process of forming new blood vessels. Blood carries the oxygen and nutrients required for healthy tissue. Most joints do not work properly because they have limited blood flow.

Collagen Synthesis– a structural protein process that forms connective tissue. It helps create muscles, tendons, skin, bones, and joints.

Fibroblast Proliferation – a type of cell that is responsible for making the extracellular matrix and collagen. These two substances play a critical role in wound healing.

The Process

To obtain platelets, the patient’s blood is drawn. The blood is then spun in a centrifuge, which separates or fractionates the blood into three parts.

The layer of plasma, which contains the platelets, is collected. The platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is then injected into the same patient’s allocated joint or joints. Within days the patient may experience reduced pain; however, multiple applications are generally needed to achieve total pain relief. It’s important to note that all pain relief is permanent unless the site is reinjured.

Regenerative Medicine for Chronic Pain

Regenerative Joint Therapy, also known as prolotherapy, is an injection-based treatment used to treat chronic pain. A natural irritant is injected into the soft tissue of an injured joint, which kick-starts the body’s healing response.

Prolotherapy is not a surgical treatment and, because of this, it is also known as a regenerative joint injection or non-surgical ligament and tendon reconstruction.

While it is most commonly used for the back, doctors may also use prolotherapy in the following areas of the body:

  • Knees
  • Hips
  • Shoulders
  • Other joints and ligaments

Regenerative Medicine for Cosmetic Purposes

Regenerative Medicine can also be used for cosmetic purposes. To decrease the appearance of wrinkles, the patient’s own PRP is strategically injected into areas of the face. Over time, usually 4-6 weeks, the patient’s own biological matter begins to grow, resulting in long lasting volume. The result is subtler than other fillers, making it a great choice for anyone wanting to be discrete.

Why Choose Arizona Integrative Medical

Regenerative Medicine requires a great amount of skill. To achieve desired results, you should choose a physician that is highly experienced. At Arizona Integrative Medical Center, we are proud to have very skilled specialists on staff who are highly experienced in alternative medicine techniques like Regenerative Medicine.
