Your Guide to Survive the Pollen Season

Spring is known for its colors, beautiful flowers, warm temperatures and festivals; it is a breath of fresh air. However, for many people, spring brings seasonal allergies that last longer than three months, and they cannot relent until the wind brings a tinge of chill again.

How long does this season last?

The pollen season can be divided into three sub-seasons that usually start with spring in March. This first sub-season is referred to as ‘Tree Pollen Season’, and it lasts until May. It is followed by ‘Grass Pollen Season’, which typically lasts from May to mid-July, and the ‘Ragweed’ season continues until the first frost.

Regional Differences

Different regions have different triggers, and people are usually sensitive to one or two of the allergens. For instance, if you are in Texas, it is likely that the mountain cedar trees will be the leading cause of your allergies as they pollinate in January and February, therefore, having much higher counts earlier in the year. However, if you are in California, Bermuda grass is the primary allergen and will trigger your symptoms. Ragweed isn’t an issue there.

Survival and Coping Mechanisms

Allergies can affect how you live your life, but luckily there are ways you can minimize allergy symptoms. Some methods and medication can help you through the season and allow you to enjoy the vibrant spring colors.

The first and easiest method is to stay indoors and seal your house so that pollen contaminants don’t trigger your symptoms while you are inside.

The following medication has proven itself to be effective against pollen allergens and is widely recommended by doctors worldwide.

Intranasal Steroids

This is the most effective medication against allergies and is available over the counter as they are safe to use.

Antihistamines

This is another group of proven and tested medication. The second-generation antihistamines like Claritin, Xyzal, and Zyrtec are low-sedating or non-sedating, and they can help relieve the symptoms immediately.

Allergy Shots

Some people experience severe symptoms causing sensitivity to the slightest contaminants in the room. In that case, symptoms could interfere with work or school performance and outdoor activities, causing sleep disruptions and impairments despite the measures being taken.

If the medications mentioned above don’t help, the allergy shots are a ray of hope!

The allergy shots are also known as ‘Allergen Immunotherapy’ and are an option for eligible patients. These shots affect the underlying allergy potential, which drives the symptoms and treats them. Different people are sensitive to various allergens; some are allergic to pollen while some are allergic to dust, and they all need different remedies to treat the symptoms.

It is recommended to visit an allergist at the start of the season and find the right combination of remedies for your seasonal allergies.
